Help a Friend

3 things you need to KNOW
-
They are not thinking rationally.
Be prepared with a plan or some suggestions if they need help making decisions.
-
They need to express difficult feelings.
Sometimes a listening hear may be all they need. Try not to take things they say too personally.
-
They need you to stand by them.
They need to know they’re not alone, that you care about them and will help them.
3 things you need to DO if you think the person may take their life
-
Talk to them about your concerns.
They may be so caught up in survival mode they don’t even realize how bad things are.
-
Encourage them to call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1.800.273.TALK (8255).
Perhaps a nudge in the right direction is all they need.
-
Tell another friend, family member, pastor, or health care professional who can help.
Telling others creates a safety net that will help both of you. A strong rope is made of many threads.
